You can do nothing by yourself…

Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. (John 5:19-20)

You can do nothing by yourself. There is a major and long-planned spiritual attack taking place in the United States that is not only targeting democratic institutions, but also much of my church and the witness of my gospel. It is the wrong strategy to try to come “head-on” against misinformation and conspiracy theories. The only way to fight back is with an opposite spirit and with a determination to listen and to value the person more than their opinion. You don’t have to be afraid, but you do have to be diligent to pray and to share with others the way to victory in this present spiritual war. No kingdom of the world power-over solution will work in this situation, in fact it will lead to greater and greater division. My church must exercise power-under solutions using sacrificial love, empathy, and a willingness to show that you walk in grace and mercy. I am not asking my children to ignore the problems of the world or to be passive in their response, but I am commanding you to look closely at the example you have in Jesus and to be determined to follow his example. How my church responds will determine how deep this divide will eventually become. I am looking for peacemakers who understand that to make peace is not to win an argument, but to be image-bearers of the Prince of Peace. You can do nothing by yourself. But there is no limit to what you can do as you learn to better see what I’m doing around you.
