In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.
(Luke 14:33-35)
I don’t ask you to give up everything you have because I am jealous over what you have, nor because there is some special blessing in possessing nothing. You must give up all you have because only then can we have a bonding together that is like salt. A one to one bonding of Sodium and Chloride ions forms one of the most stable bonds of the chemical world. Only when salt is diluted by water does it dry into a powder that still looks like salt but no longer is salty. It’s important to maintain a “poverty of spirit” attitude every day of your life; to give up everything that you trust in that you might have a strong one-on-one bond with me. There are many “compounds” in the church that resemble salt and that even add spice to the service, but only the person willing to be fully and completely bonded to me will preserve the principles of my kingdom and the integrity of my church.
